I'm not going to reveal how many trench coats I own but I have collected many great ones over the years, so I know what to look for and how to wear them.

They’re a wardrobe essential that never goes out of fashion, making them a worthy investment piece.

This season, iterations of the classic include billowing silhouettes, leather and – for the more adventurous – statement metallics.

THE TRENCH COAT

Oversized cuts are great for layering. It doesn’t matter if the shoulder seams hang below where they should naturally sit – just be sure to pair with something more fitted on your lower half. The hem should hit the middle of your calf, or just below.
Use the belt to show off your waist, even when the coat is undone, by tying it in a bow at the back so the coat flatters as it hangs.
Play around with colour – olive and chocolate brown are popular this season.
